This is a band that's already a band. They look like a unit and feel like the finished product. All I don't understand with The Ryes is why they're not charting top 40 already. They obviously love being on the stage, put every ounce of skill and enthusiasm into their 30 minute set. The room is crammed by the time they take the stage. This is Scissor Sisters meets The Feeling with a sucker punch of Robbie Williams thrown in for good measure. Its unpretentious feel good pop, with memorable trills, lyrics and enough male tottie to keep the girls screaming at the pit barriers of festivals all summer.
Lead vocalist Paul Canning is a natural showman and Dan Williams rocks the keyboards at stage left sporting a rather dapper trilby. 'Jennifer' is a song that will be blasted out in traffic jams across the country on Scott Mills drive time. Think 'I don't fell like dancing' with a straight lead singer. 'Hideaway' slowed the pace somewhat and showed a slightly more serious side to The Ryes and though the lyrics showed an underlying emotional sensitivity, 'I never was asleep, though you tried to keep me from my dreams', the catchy riffs and upbeat drumming stops this turning into a sob story.
The Ryes deserve a far bigger stage than this. I had no reason to question why the room cleared shortly after they left the stage… those 'in the know' had come to see one band only tonight and it wasn't the main act.
