Clearlake / The Ryes at the Underground - Feb 4

Date of event: 04/02/2006
Location: Underground Theatre

The NME-applauded Clearlake and up-comers The Ryes marched into Eastbourne on Friday night and played contrasting sets with skill and obvious talent.

The Ryes, delivering a sound that jumped from pop-punk to ska and to lo-fi indie, had the theatre filled to the brim. The crowd was made up of teenagers nodding heads and on the verge of ruining their dignity and street cred by jumping about in a maddened, rock 'n' roll ignited craze.

Songs such as 'Fight' and 'Hide Away' show why The Ryes are causing such a stir in the music industry. Their clever, yet simple, catchy riffs light up songs and their London sound, warmed up by the sunshine coast, has the crowd bouncing along.

The stylishly clad five-piece end the set with 'Outta Here' and the single, 'Fight'. The ska-punk perfection proves to be too much for the kids as, overwhelmed, they spring into a chaotic burst of moshing, stage diving and pogo-ing. F**k me: Rock 'n' Roll is alive in Eastbourne.

After such youthful spirit it's a shame that a band like Clearlake should follow. That's not to knock Clearlake. Their melodic, Interpol-esque sound was entertaining enough but the vocals were often lost in a wall of distorted guitars and pounding drums. Fans of Secret Machines should take note and Clearlake even resembled Nine Black Alps at times, but compared to their support they lacked the appeal to the young audience.

Clearlake will no doubt go on to hold down a strong position in their genre but tonight belonged to The Ryes, their snazzy dress sense and their ska-punk-indie mix. They look ready to take on the world.
